Pinehurst is a golf village on sand roads where you can walk from the hotel to dinner, play more than one nine that isn’t a major venue, and still chase No. 2 if the group wants the championship 18. Longleaf pines, native sand, and a downtown that still works on foot — that’s the trip.
Fly Raleigh-Durham, book the room and tee time together when you want the numbered resort nines, and leave room for Mid Pines, Pine Needles, or Tobacco Road if the foursome wants public golf you can sheet without a resort night. The village and Southern Pines
The Village of Pinehurst sits on the sand with Frederick Law Olmsted’s streets looping around the Carolina, the shops, and sandy paths between them. You can finish a round, walk to dinner, and keep the rental car for the airport and the off-village nines instead of treating it like a third member of the group.
Southern Pines is a few minutes east — brick sidewalks on Broad Street, actual storefronts, and a short hop to Mid Pines and Pine Needles. Stay in the village if you want hotel-to-clubhouse walking. Stay in Southern Pines if you want a town grid and those Ross courses as the main week.
Stay-and-play on the resort
If you want advance tee times on the numbered resort nines — Nos. 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 — you book as a member or an overnight guest. That is how Pinehurst sells those sheets, and it is also how you get the full village experience: room, clubhouse, and dinner without a long drive between them.

No. 2 is the round a lot of groups build the week around. Packages typically need a multi-night stay for No. 2, No. 4, or No. 10, and busy-season weekends often need a longer stay. Premiums exist on No. 2 and No. 10. Hidden Gems, when it is on the board, keeps you on Nos. 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 — a good way to play more of the property when No. 2 is not the only goal.
Carts stay on the path on No. 2 and No. 4. No. 10 is walking only. Request the caddie when you reserve, not in the parking lot. If you are not staying on the resort, walk-on leftovers sometimes open on Nos. 1, 3, and 5 on a short window before play, and The Cradle is year-round. Call 855-835-0771, option 5, or use the walk-on portal linked from the golf page. Those times are non-cancellable — treat them as a bonus loop, not the plan for No. 2.
Spring and fall are when the village is busiest. Summer afternoons run hot, so early times and sun gear help. Winter is playable. Ask the agent about maintenance when you book — they take nines down in the warm months, and those windows move.
Public nines you can book
The Sandhills are bigger than one resort. Mid Pines, Pine Needles, and Tobacco Road give you strong public and lodge golf you can actually sheet — whether you mix them with a resort night or build the whole week around Southern Pines.

Forest Creek, the Country Club of North Carolina, and a Pinehurst membership tee sheet are private — great when you have access. If you don’t, stick to the resort packages, Mid Pines, Pine Needles, and Tobacco Road.
Getting there
Fly Raleigh-Durham (RDU). That drive is about 75 minutes and is the airport most groups use. Charlotte is farther. Moore County (SOP) is the small field if you are on a private plane.
Ride-share is thin in the village. Pinehurst runs a complimentary on-call shuttle to resort buildings and the village proper — handy on property, not a substitute for a rental if you are playing Mid Pines, Pine Needles, or Tobacco Road. A car still makes those off-resort nines easier.
Lock the dates the foursome can travel, book the package or official tee sheet next, then a refundable room, then the RDU flight. Do not buy the airfare first.
Bottom line
Pinehurst is a walkable Sandhills week: village streets on sand, numbered resort nines when you stay as a guest, and Mid Pines, Pine Needles, and Tobacco Road when you want public golf you can sheet. Open Packages if No. 2 or the other guest nines are the point. Open the Mid Pines, Pine Needles, and Tobacco Road sheets if Southern Pines is the week.
