Scottsdale Winter Golf: When to Book and What It Costs (2026)

January. 72°F at 8 a.m. Dew on ryegrass, McDowells still pink, a short-sleeve that would be a joke on your frozen home course. Back there the range balls are stuck together. Out here the tee sheet is the problem, not the weather.

This is when to book January–April, what October overseeding actually does, which public courses you can play, and what it costs in dollars we can source. Use the golf vacation planner if dates are still mush. Steal from the 2026 packing list once the flights are real. Labor Day Scottsdale is heat and twilight — that page is Best Golf Destinations for Labor Day Weekend. This one is winter.

When to book (60–90 days, then the exceptions)

Peak is January through April. You book 60–90 days out, not the week you land.

90 days, official: We-Ko-Pa (nofollow, not sponsored) — general reservations to 90 days; Arizona I.D. rate only inside 7 days; no third-party sheets. Troon North (nofollow, not sponsored) — Monument and Pinnacle, 90 days, dynamic. Prime mornings die the day the window opens.

60 days, official: Papago (nofollow, not sponsored) public rates for non-cardholders. City-card rates are 9 days. Their FAQ still says 90 for public; the booker that takes the card says 60. Use 60.

TPC Scottsdale does not print a simple public window. Open the official EZLinks sheet (nofollow, not sponsored) the day your dates exist, or call 480-585-4334. Stadium mornings in February and March do not sit.

Talking Stick card rates are 3 days out. Times booked earlier keep the rate you reserved. Public times exist beyond three days — do not treat 3 as the only window.

Grayhawk is public and dynamic. White Tee / Black Tee cards are a locals product (2026 already sold out when we checked). You do not get that rate because you flew in.

Encanto and the rest of Phoenix Golf: cardholder advance is 9 days. One-trip visitors take the public sheet and do not count on a Saturday 8:00 appearing in January.

Order: dates you can fly → Stadium / Troon / We-Ko-Pa on the official booker → refundable room → flight. Do not buy the airfare first.

WM Phoenix Open week is not a play week. February 2–8, 2026 (72 holes Thursday–Sunday, February 5–8) is tournament week on Stadium. Spectator, or play somewhere else. Grandstands linger.

Overseeding (October is a rotation, not a shutdown)

Arizona shops scalp Bermuda and plant rye so January looks like a postcard. The work is typically 10–21 days closed, then cart-path-only. Courses rotate. We are not inventing a “Scottsdale is closed in October” week.

Posted 2026 closures:

We-Ko-Pa (rates page — nofollow, not sponsored) — Cholla closed October 5–22, reopens the 23rd. Saguaro closed October 12–29, reopens the 30th.

Troon North (club course page) — Pinnacle September 20–October 8. Monument October 4–24. Whole facility dark October 4–8.

Grayhawk (maintenance — nofollow, not sponsored) — Talon September 28–October 11. Raptor October 12–29.

Talking Stick (club maintenance page) — O’odham closed September 27 at noon, reopens October 16; cart path only through November 6. Piipaash closed October 18 at noon, reopens November 6; cart path only through November 27.

Pair an open 18. Call the day before. Grow-in rye is still a teenager. TPC’s 2026 overseed dates were not on the public TPC pages we checked — ask the shop. January–March is the rye you are paying for. October is cheaper weather and a maintenance puzzle.

Where to play (public you can book)

You are not playing Desert Mountain, Whisper Rock, Silverleaf, Estancia, or Phoenix Country Club because a list named them. Private is a limitation. Member hookup or skip it.

TPC Scottsdale — Stadium and Champions. Public. Stadium is the WM Phoenix Open 18 (Weiskopf / Morrish). Champions is the Heckenkemper desert 18 you finish when Stadium is a circus. EZLinks (nofollow, not sponsored). 480-585-4334. No GolfNow. Dynamic. No winter rack we can quote. The 2026 TPC Pass PDF lists Stadium guest max as NA January 1–May 3. Open the sheet.

Troon North — Monument and Pinnacle. Daily-fee high desert. Book Troon (nofollow, not sponsored), 480-585-7700. Dynamic. 5% water surcharge hits at check-in, not in the quote. Forecaddie included Thursday–Saturday, 8:00–11:00 a.m., January 18–April 25, 2026; recommended gratuity $40+ per player. No walking caddies. Twilight / 9-hole-plus is not a guaranteed 18.

We-Ko-Pa — Saguaro and Cholla. Fort McDowell. No houses in the landing areas. Coore & Crenshaw (Saguaro) is the argument on the plane. Fixed seasonal card, no aggregators. Rates and book (nofollow, not sponsored). 480-836-9000. Posted resort rate, 0–90 days, exclusive of 9.0% tax: $309 February 9–April 26, 2026 ($219 AZ I.D. inside 7 days); $239 October 23, 2026–January 7, 2027 ($179 AZ I.D.). Real Arizona license, every player. 36-hole package $579 for two rounds in the Feb 9–Apr 26 window. Early January times can frost-delay — they say so on the reservation page.

Grayhawk — Raptor and Talon. Public since 1994. Dynamic. grayhawkgolf.com (nofollow, not sponsored), 480-502-1800. Posted add-ons: 8.05% tax and a 5% course water resource fee. No winter rack. We are not inventing $270.

Talking Stick — O’odham and Piipaash. Coore & Crenshaw / Crenshaw. Public. Dynamic. Tee times (nofollow, not sponsored), 480-860-2221. No posted winter rack. The 2026–2027 Golf Card is $129 + tax (October 1, 2026–September 30, 2027) — locals math, not a one-trip coupon.

Encanto and Papago (Phoenix municipal). Not Scottsdale proper. Twenty-five minutes, traffic willing. Encanto 18 (1935 William P. Bell): city page $18–$62. Last city post-overseed sheet we can cite had walking public $58 weekday / $63 weekend open–1 p.m. through late December 2025, cart $16 extra. No posted Encanto 18 January–April 2026 card. Phoenix Golf booker (nofollow, not sponsored) or 602-534-GOLF. Encanto 9 is $10–$24 on the city page. Papago (Billy Bell): papagogolfclub.com (nofollow, not sponsored), 602-275-8428. No published winter green fee. Add 8.6% tax and 4% site improvement. Cart in the greens fee. Public: 60 days.

What it costs (grown-up numbers, sourced)

USD. Per player. Tax and water sit on top unless a city sheet already baked tax in.

Piece 2026 winter, sourced
We-Ko-Pa (Feb 9–Apr 26) $309 resort / $219 AZ I.D. + 9% tax
We-Ko-Pa (Oct 23–Jan 7, 2027) $239 / $179 + 9% tax
Troon North Dynamic. 5% water at check-in. Forecaddie tip $40+
TPC Stadium / Champions Dynamic. No public winter rack. EZLinks is the number
Grayhawk Dynamic + 8.05% tax + 5% water
Talking Stick Dynamic. Card $129 + tax if you actually use it
Encanto 18 City range $18–$62. Confirm live
Papago Unpublished winter fee. Tax 8.6% + 4%
TPC Pass (locals) $979 + tax; Stadium guest max NA Jan 1–May 3

Two premium public 18s (Troon or We-Ko-Pa plus Stadium) is real money before the room. Two munis and one We-Ko-Pa is how a mixed-handicap group stays honest. We are not inventing a hotel range. Book refundable. Old Town if dinner is half the trip. North Scottsdale if the 6:50 a.m. time is the trip.

Summer is the inverse: Labor Day heat, We-Ko-Pa’s own card at $109 resort June 15–August 27. Winter is the weather. You pay for it.

Sample four days that does not stack Stadium, Troon, and a 10 p.m. dinner every night: Day 1 PHX, rental, hotel by tomorrow’s first tee. Day 2 the expensive 18 (Stadium or Troon Monument) — not if it is February 2–8. Day 3 We-Ko-Pa Saguaro, or Grayhawk / Talking Stick if Saguaro is gone. Day 4 Papago or Encanto toward the airport. Thursday–Sunday still works: one premium, one value, one municipal. Three Stadium-priced rounds is how the budget dies.

Quick answers

When do I book January–April? 60–90 days. Troon and We-Ko-Pa at 90. Papago public at 60. TPC the day the sheet shows your date.

Can I play Stadium during the WM Phoenix Open? No. February 2–8, 2026.

Is October dead? No. Courses rotate 10–21 days. Posted 2026 dates above. Shops move them if the weather does.

Desert Mountain / Whisper Rock / Silverleaf? Private. Not a plan.

Do I need a car? Yes, unless you never leave a stay-and-play. PHX + rental. Clubs in a travel cover — packing list.

GolfNow? No. Official booker or the shop phone.

Bottom line

Scottsdale in winter is the 72°F morning in the group chat. The constraint is the tee sheet, not a frost delay. Book 60–90 days out for January–April. Treat October as an overseed rotation — We-Ko-Pa, Troon, Grayhawk, and Talking Stick already posted 2026 closures. They do not all go dark the same Monday.

Play TPC, Troon North, We-Ko-Pa, Grayhawk, Talking Stick, Papago, Encanto. Quote We-Ko-Pa’s $309 because they printed it. Everything else is dynamic — open the official sheet.

Book: dates → official tee sheet (nofollow) → refundable room → flight. Skip the private-club fantasy. Labor Day heat is a different week.
