Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is not one resort campus with three eighteens beside the lodge. It is a statewide public-golf road map: eleven sites and more than 400 holes, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., stretched from Huntsville and Muscle Shoals down through Birmingham and Prattville to Mobile Bay and Point Clear. The tee markers are pegged to ability, not age or gender, so the same championship routing that can stretch toward tournament length still has honest boxes for a casual traveler. That mix — serious architecture, public access, and sites close enough to stack into a real week — is why golfers treat the Trail as a stay-and-play product rather than a single-day detour.

What makes a Trail week work is corridor thinking. Oxmoor Valley and Ross Bridge sit roughly two miles apart on the official Trail distance table — a Birmingham hub you can play without living in the car. Capitol Hill in Prattville and Grand National in Opelika form a central-east pair with on-course Marriott nights. Hampton Cove and The Shoals anchor north Alabama; Magnolia Grove and Lakewood Club cover the Gulf. Highland Oaks in Dothan and Cambrian Ridge in Greenville are real Trail sites; they simply sit farther from the usual first-week hubs, so most visitors leave them for a later loop rather than forcing all eleven stops into one rental-car sprint.

Lodging follows the same map. The official Resort Collection puts eight Marriott, Renaissance, and Autograph Collection hotels on the Trail — Renaissance Ross Bridge beside the Hoover eighteen, Auburn Marriott Opelika at Grand National, Montgomery Marriott Prattville overlooking Capitol Hill’s Senator, the Grand Hotel at Lakewood, Renaissance Shoals on the Tennessee River, plus downtown Montgomery and two Mobile Renaissance properties for Magnolia Grove. Packages book through RTJ Reservations as golf or golf-and-lodging; near-term day-play lives on the online tee-time system. Seasonal specials (fall, winter, summer) explain when rates lean — they are planning facts, not the identity of this page. If dates are still flexible, the golf vacation planner is a calm place to line rounds against nights before anything locks.

What the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is

Official Trail pages frame the collection as Alabama’s largest public-course project of its kind: championship layouts extracted from the land across the state, not a manufactured theme park. After the original sites opened, the Trail expanded; historic Lakewood Club in Point Clear became the eleventh site and pushed the total past 400 holes. Each complex carries its own personality — mining-land elevation at Oxmoor, lake shore at Grand National, bunker-free River at Hampton Cove, Mobile Bay breezes at Lakewood — while sharing the same public book paths and ability-based tees.

Alabama Tourism lists the Trail as a statewide place to go; the golf facts that matter for trip building live on rtjgolf.com and the 2026 Trail Guide. For a visitor, the useful takeaway is simple: this is a multi-stop, public-access product with resort nights on many of the best hubs — closer in spirit to a road-trip week than to a single gated resort.

How booking works on the Trail

Two paths cover almost every traveler week.

Near-term day-play uses the Trail’s online tee-time system (ClubCaddie). Public golfers can book up to seven days out. Trail Card and Annual Members get a longer online window (official pages put Card/Annual at 11 days; Platinum at 14). A June 2026 policy update moved day-play reservations to an online-only system — the tee-times page is the live how-to when a first login is needed.

Packages farther out go through RTJ Reservations. Official language: packages bookable from 12 months to 7 days prior, and they may include golf or golf and lodging. Contact lines printed on that page include toll-free 1-800-949-4444 (option 2), ReservationsRequest@RTJGolf.com, and weekday hours 9 a.m.–6 p.m. ET. Golf packages cannot combine with Trail Card or membership discounts. Driving ranges close for at least part of each Tuesday across the Trail — useful when stacking practice mornings.

Rooms can also book directly on Resort Collection property sites, with golf still flowing through tee times or Reservations. That split is normal: lock the corridor and the nights that fit it, then decide whether a package or separate golf tickets match the dates.

Corridor options for a Trail week

A strong Trail week usually picks one corridor (or two hubs), not a checklist of all eleven sites. Official inter-site miles and approximate drive times live on the Trail and Reservations pages — figures below come from those tables and stay traffic-dependent.

Birmingham core. Oxmoor Valley and Ross Bridge are about 2 miles / ~5 minutes apart on the official table. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth (BHM) sits roughly 18–19 miles from those two sites. Renaissance Ross Bridge puts lodging on the resort campus; Oxmoor’s Ridge, Valley, and walking-only Back Yard short course give the week depth without a long transfer. When fall specials are live, the official Fall Magic pair is exactly this Oxmoor + Ross Bridge combo.

Central / east. Capitol Hill in Prattville and Grand National in Opelika sit about 77 miles / ~1:19 apart; Capitol Hill to Ross Bridge is about 84 miles / ~1:24. Montgomery Marriott Prattville overlooks the Senator; Auburn Marriott Opelika sits on Grand National’s lakefront campus. A Birmingham add stays optional when the group wants Ross Bridge or Oxmoor on the same trip.

North Alabama. Hampton Cove (Huntsville) and The Shoals (Muscle Shoals) are about 76 miles / ~1:31 apart; Hampton Cove to Silver Lakes is about 77 miles / ~1:32. Renaissance Shoals anchors the Tennessee River night; Hampton Cove’s official page lists nearby hotels (not all Resort Collection) when the north gateway is the base. Silver Lakes is a natural east add when the card still has room.

Gulf / south. Magnolia Grove and Lakewood Club are about 42 miles / ~0:58 apart. Mobile Renaissance properties pair with Magnolia; the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa (Autograph Collection) sits with Lakewood in Point Clear. Official Fall Swing pairs those two courses when that special is live.

Most first weeks leave Highland Oaks (Dothan) and Cambrian Ridge (Greenville) for a later loop. Both remain Trail sites with their own public sheets; from Birmingham or Huntsville hubs, the official tables show longer transfers, so they fit a south/central itinerary better than a day-one lock.

Course stops worth the windshield time

These are the anchors most first Trail weeks build around — public day-play or package golf, with renovation flags called out where official pages print them.

Ross Bridge (Hoover)

Ross Bridge is the Trail’s on-campus Renaissance resort eighteen in Shannon Valley — long from the tips, flexible from the many tees, with lakes, an 80-foot waterfall between the 9th and 18th, and a parkland feel carved through old mining ground. It is the natural Birmingham-core lock when the group wants resort lodging steps from the round. Near-term times book on the Trail tee-time system; packages through Reservations; rooms via Ross Bridge Resort / Marriott BHMHV.

Oxmoor Valley — Ridge, Valley, and The Back Yard

Oxmoor Valley sits minutes from revitalized downtown Birmingham on former U.S. Steel mining land — Appalachian peaks and valleys, creeks, and elevation. Valley received a full renovation in 2021 (new tees, bunkers, TifEagle greens). The Back Yard is the walking-only nine-hole par-3 — fun depth, and not valid on the official Fall Magic / 2 Days or More / Unlimited specials. Planning flag: Ridge’s greens renovation closes that course May 10–October 1, 2027 per the live Oxmoor maintenance board — do not treat Ridge as closed for that window in 2026.

Grand National — Links, Lake, and Short

Grand National in Auburn / Opelika sits on 600-acre Lake Saugahatchee, with Robert Trent Jones, Sr. famously calling it the greatest natural site for golf he had seen. Official pages note Golf World readers ranking it the #1 public golf facility; Links carries a recent renovation with TifEagle greens; Lake drapes holes along the shore; the Short Course is an 18-hole par-3 collection. Auburn Marriott Opelika Resort & Spa is the on-site Resort Collection night. Book golf via tee times or Reservations; lodging via marriottgrandnational.com.

Capitol Hill — Judge, Legislator, Senator

Capitol Hill in Prattville spreads three distinct eighteens across a huge site north of Montgomery — Judge along the Alabama River backwaters, Legislator through pines and cypress swamp, Senator as a pot-bunker links-leaning eighteen. Montgomery Marriott Prattville overlooks the Senator. Renovation flag: official Capitol Hill banner states The Judge is closed for renovations with a planned reopen October 1, 2026 — verify before locking an early-fall Judge morning. Legislator and Senator remain the playable Capitol Hill story until that date.

Hampton Cove and The Shoals (north spine)

Hampton Cove is the northern gateway — Highlands with bent greens and the mule-barn landmark, River as the RTJ layout without bunkers, plus a Short Course. Lodging on the official page is a nearby-hotel list (Hampton Inn & Suites Hampton Cove, downtown Huntsville options, and others with approximate miles). The Shoals in Muscle Shoals pairs Fighting Joe (first Trail course over 8,000 yards from the tips) with Schoolmaster above Wilson Lake; Renaissance Shoals Resort & Spa is the Resort Collection anchor on the Tennessee River.

Magnolia Grove and Lakewood Club (Gulf spine)

Magnolia Grove in Mobile offers renovated Crossings and Falls championship eighteens plus a Short Course that Golf Digest has called the best par-3 in America on the official page. Battle House and Riverview Renaissance properties cover Mobile nights. Lakewood Club at Point Clear pairs Dogwood and Azalea with the Grand Hotel — Perry Maxwell roots, later Trail renovations, Mobile Bay setting, and proper attire required (no jeans or t-shirts). Seasonal specials often list higher starting tiers for Lakewood and Ross Bridge; Grand Hotel also publishes its own golf paths beside Trail tee times and Reservations.

Silver Lakes, Cambrian Ridge, Highland Oaks

Silver Lakes (Anniston / Gadsden) is the optional north/east add — Heartbreaker, Backbreaker, Mindbreaker, and a Short Course. Cambrian Ridge and Highland Oaks stay on the Trail map for south and south-central loops. Most Birmingham- or Huntsville-based first weeks leave them for a later pass — that is trip shape, not an omission from the Trail itself.

Where lodging sits on the Trail

The official Resort Collection lists eight properties:

PropertyNatural golf pair
Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort & SpaRoss Bridge (+ Oxmoor day trips)
Auburn Marriott Opelika Resort & Spa at Grand NationalGrand National
Montgomery Marriott Prattville Hotel & Conference Center at Capitol HillCapitol Hill
The Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa, Autograph CollectionLakewood Club
Renaissance Shoals Resort & SpaThe Shoals
Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention CenterCapitol Hill / downtown Montgomery
Renaissance Mobile Riverview Plaza HotelMagnolia Grove
The Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel & SpaMagnolia Grove

Reservations states packages may include golf or golf and lodging, bookable 12 months to 7 days out; the Trail Guide notes nearby accommodations can bundle into stay-and-play packages. Hampton Cove remains the north-gateway exception: nearby hotels on the course page rather than an on-site Resort Collection flag at the clubhouse itself.

Airports and drives

A rental car is the practical Trail tool — sites spread statewide, and official mileage tables exist so hubs can stack cleanly. Primary airport-to-site miles come from the RTJ Reservations “Mileage from Airports” table.

Seasonal packages and rates windows

Seasonal boards are planning tools, not the identity of the Trail trip. When a window is live, it explains inclusions and which course pairs sit on special; dollars move, so the official pages stay the live source.

Fall window (verified on the official fall page): September 8, 2026 – November 15, 2026. Official fall golf specials (golf + cart + range balls — not rooms or breakfast on that page) include:

  • 2 Days or More — one round per day for two or more days, cart, unlimited range balls (higher starting tiers called out for Ross Bridge and Lakewood; not valid at The Back Yard)
  • Fall Unlimited — unlimited golf with cart and range balls (Lakewood Unlimited limited to Mon / Tue / Thu; higher Ross Bridge / Lakewood tiers; not valid at The Back Yard)
  • Fall Swing — one round Magnolia Grove + one round Lakewood Club
  • Fall Magic — one round Oxmoor Valley + one round Ross Bridge (not valid at The Back Yard)

Live starting-at and package figures print on rtjgolf.com/fall/ — check that page for current dollars rather than freezing a rate card here. Lodging still books through Reservations or the Resort Collection properties.

Adjacent boards (context only): Winter packages currently list November 16, 2026 – March 7, 2027 on rtjgolf.com/winter/; summer and greens-fee pages rotate the same way. When fall ends, the Trail map and booking paths stay useful — only the seasonal board changes.

Golfers comparing autumn weeks across regions sometimes also open best fall golf trips. Winter planners who want a different season hub can glance at best winter golf destinations or light cold-weather tips on golf in winter — those pages are adjacent, not Alabama substitutes.

Plan the Trail week

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail rewards a corridor you can actually drive: Birmingham’s Oxmoor–Ross Bridge denseness, Capitol Hill with Grand National, the north Huntsville–Shoals pair, or the Gulf Magnolia–Lakewood swing — with Resort Collection nights on most of those hubs and public tee paths that scale from a seven-day day-play login to a twelve-month package. Judge’s planned October 1, 2026 reopen and Oxmoor Ridge’s 2027 greens window are the renovation dates worth re-checking before a specific week locks.

For trip-prep rhythm once the corridor is clear, the golf vacation planner and golf trip packing list keep lodging, rounds, and bags in human order. Destination Golf’s sell-the-trip attitude siblings for single-campus weeks — Streamsong and Bandon Dunes — are different products on different maps; they are useful for how a golf week feels when it is built around great public golf, not stand-ins for Alabama’s multi-site Trail.

Questions about how a Trail corridor sits beside those peers? editor@destination-golf.com is available. For the Trail itself, start with the corridor, the Reservations or tee-time path that matches the dates, and the live seasonal board when a rates window is open.
